Abstract

Background: Episiotomy is an incision action on the perineum. Episiotomy can cause pain and lead to changes in tissue contuity. Pain management method include pharmacological and nonpharmacological approaches. One of the nonpharmacological pain treatments that can be given is the provision of cold compress in the form of ice pack (ice pack therapy). Objective: To know the effect of the ice pack therapy on the pain scale decrease of post episiotomy in Rahma ward of Muhammadiyah hospital of Gombong. Method: This research is a Quasy Experiment with Pretest and Posttest Control Group Design. The samples are 40 post partum mothers having episiotomy taken by Accidental sampling. Data were analyzed by using descriptive and by comparative analysis using Wicoxon and Man Whitney-U. Result: Threatment according to hospital standard (relaxation distraction) can effectively decrease post episiotomy pain. Pre test shows mean = 8.15 or in the category of severe pain and post test indicates mean = 6.50 or in moderate pain category. Ice packs can effectively decrease post episiotomy pain. In the ice pack intervention, the pre test interval shows mean = 8.10 or in the catagory of severe pain and post test shows mean = 3,95 or in the category of mild pain. Conclusion: Ice pack therapy is more effective than a therapy according to hospital standard (relaxation distraction) in reducing post episiotomy pain (p = 0.000).
